Tale
Elwood Curtis’ college dream is crumbling by the side of a two-lane highway in Florida. Bearing the weight of an innocent misstep, he is condemned to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal deep South Jim Crow reformatory. He meets another Ward, Turner who has seen it all. Two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner provides basic survival advice, Elwood clings to his optimistic view of the world. Against the backdrop of the growing Civil Rights Movement, the existence of Elwood and Turner seems a world away from the polished oratory of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood struggles to retain his humanity, becoming a new vision for Turner.
