About to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins to experience increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the mounting horrors and pressures of fame, Skye is forced to confront her past. The scar on Skye’s knee is in the shape of a smile. In one scene, Skye places a bottle of VOSS water on a stone/marble kitchen counter and a noise can be heard that matches the sound of something plastic being placed down. VOSS water bottles are made of glass, something that is actually specifically highlighted in the film, so the audio does not match the action seen. Skye Riley: [to the Smile Entity] You’re not in control, I am!. Appeared in The 7PM Project: October 17, 2024 episode (2024). A very disturbing depiction of the Smile phenomenon using the pop music scene and celebrity culture as a backdrop. Skye, the central character, is at the center of this horrific story that features layers upon layers of her life spiraling out of control. We see most of the story from Skye’s perspective and so the film does a great job of creating empathy for the character despite all her moral failings. It also features some deep themes about the toxic culture of pop stardom. In the film, Smile takes on many meanings as it also reflects the pressure to show up and smile for the cameras when one’s mental health is in ruins. Her mom, assistant, and fans all seem reasonable amidst the chaos but their actions seem to become instruments of torture. It’s so disturbing, I personally feel like Skye goes through too much and in the end I was just relieved that the film was over. If you like body horror, then you’ll love this. The film is scary enough but it’s more disturbing than scary.
